Emma Oakey

Assisi Catholic College Curriculum Middle Leader – Business

Upon leaving high school, Emma Oakey was not sure what she wanted to do. However, after she enrolled in an initial teacher education program it soon became clear to Emma that teaching was the profession for her.

This was largely thanks to the support and guidance provided by her mentor teacher, who,

Emma explains, ‘had a lot of faith in me and invested her time to help a very nervous preservice teacher…The support gave me confidence’.

Although she found the program challenging, Emma’s teaching capability and skills grew throughout her degree, for which she was recognised with a University commendation.

Today, Emma is a beginning teacher with big aspirations who has been recognised early on for her teaching practice and leadership excellence. Emma is Curriculum Middle Leader, and was selected to sit as a member of the QCT’s Queensland Beginning and Early Career Teachers Reference Group. Emma loves to challenge herself, and so next year will commence a Master of Educational Leadership degree.

For Emma, teaching is a career with endless rewards and challenges, and one in which she continues to grow and flourish. When asked what she enjoys most about teaching, Emma explains ‘the sense of community [in a school] is unlike any other…Working with dedicated teachers on a collaborative basis each day and assisting other teachers in their own practice inspires me’.
